Film title placement

While developing my film trailer, I struggled to find a placement for the films title. To help, I decided to revisit the majority of my film trailers that previously analysed.

The film titles all appear to be shown roughly at the same section on all trailers, which is roughly the final 1/16th of the trailer. Therefore, I shall attempt to add the title of my film in the same area.

Feedback - Music choice & Additional clips

Hamish - The clips added add more context to the final clips, however, the clips already existing are too long, and don't really add the aspect of action in which you've stated are intended too.

Jack - The music added certainly adds a humorous and more slower affect to the beginning, which is what your intention was, i believe, and definitely fits together.  Sound levels should be improved so that voices can be heard  over the music.

Perry - The music improves it, slightly, and has manged to immerse me more. The ending is dull, not enough action, so far you've only managed to portray a shoddy comedy, in which the comedy comes from bad acting. I suggest re-filming some more actions shots and adding them to the end.

I shall act upon this feedback, and begin filming some more footage of action ASAP. Untill more shots are taken, editing shall continue with more sound being added, and change the sound levels for the correct balance.

Roughcut Development

These are further developments added to my initial rough cut

Additions include music at the start, introduction slides added, and a few more scenes also added.
Video was uploaded to youtube due to Vimeo's upload limit per week, therefore, key essential videos will be uploaded to Vimeo, where as development videos will be posted onto youtube.

The song chosen for the start was not in the initial selected song list, however, after trying with these songs, they didn't fit the purpose. While overhearing the song Eliza Doolittle - Missing, I liked the introduction section. Researched then found the beginning to be a sample from The Fleetwoods - Come Softly to me. This is the song used during the introduction.

Feedback

Hamish - So far so good, although some footage may be needed to be retaken due to poor acting.

Jack - Slightly humorous, with some music added, it should be improved 100%

Perry - It was neither good nor bad, mildly funny, however I'm unsure if the humour was coming from the poor acting or the context of the video itself. I suggest further development then ask me again.

It is clear that the film has had mixed reactions, however, it has been suggested to carry on this path of development.

Inital Roughcut

A2 Media-Roughcut from Chris B on Vimeo.

This is the initial roughcut to my film trailer.
This video will be adapted upon to create a final video.

Recording

I have completed the initial stages of recording. The video files have been extracted from the camera and the intiital stages of editing are beginning, However, more recording is needed to complete the video. As the video is a trailer, I am therefore not worried about continuity errors, as it will add to the effect of selecting the best parts of the film to create an effective trailer

Movie Poster Mock-up

Using an image I had saved from an AS photo shoot, I created a mock-up using some of the characters that will be within the movie trailer. After filming for the trailer, I will do another photo shoot with the entire cast, with similar effects. The text at the bottom was roughly cut from the Men In Black movie poster that i have previously researched.

Proposed songs - Added song tracks

I have Added the proposed songs songs onto the previous trailer in order to see if the song matches the trailer. the song will also continue on into the beginning of the the film trailer, so will have to be tested again when editing to ensure the soundtrack matches the video.

Block Rocking Beats - Chemical Brothers:

Stranglers - Golden Brown (Midi track was used, actual track will be used if it is selected.)

Proposed Songs used during the the trailer.

Opening Sequence -
The stranglers - Golden Brown
Block rocking Beats - Chemical Brothers (Edited to remove the voices from the sound.)

Action sequence
The Stranglers - No more Hereos
Sound Off - Trapt

During the actions Sequence, the track used must be fast paced, and suggest a lot of action, however, still not be serious enough, and keep the comical aspect of the film.

Improvement - Intro

This is the improved version of the intro for the video. The Title of the film has been moved to the end of the trailer.

Trailer Intro/Outro feedback

I performed a peer feedback on the rough video i created and posted previously.
Throughout the feedback, several things where mentioned and need to be redone to be more effective.
  1. The blue behind the company logo needs to be brighter, to ensure the logo stands out better.
  2. "Presents" needs to be a different shade of blue, and moved further away from the logo, as that clash with each other.
  3. It was suggested that the video should be the intro. If made the intro, the beginning of the trailers actual video fades in, with the title overlaying the video, and fading out to show the video in full.
This feedback shall all be taken into consideration when producing the actual trailer. I have to decide if the video should be placed at the start, or at the end. To do this, i might produce 2 trailers, both with the video at different points of the video, and gather further feedback during production.

Trailer Outro rough draft.

For the final scene, I will then reveal the name of the film, and the company name. this is a rough draft of what the outro will look like with the current logo's. The outro will change throughout the development.

(Quality of the video was reduced for a faster upload.)

company Title Continued

Seeing as the title would be placed onto a black background when added to te trailer, i dedcided to develop the logo so that it would appear on the background efficiently.

Company title

Here is a quick mockup of the company title logo that shal be used in the trailer.

Title Mock-ups

As the the title of the film will be "The Bronzemen" I decided to play around with the metallic bronze effect for the main title.

Film Title Idea

Here is the short-list of ideas for the title of the film.

The Male's Dream.
The Legacy.
New tradition.
The slackers.
The Bronzemen.

I have asked my target market of the film which of these films they proffered, these are the results.

The Male's Dream. - 5
The Legacy. - 3
New tradition. - 2
The slackers. - 7
The Bronzemen. - 8

The target market has selected that the Bronzemen is the most interesting of title names. I therefore have decided to use this as the title name, as it is the highest rated of the target market, and it will allow for more room when designing the title.

This is the initial storyboard/time line.
As the animatic doesn't portray much of what is actually going to be implemented, here is a run-down of each slide.

  1. Establishing long shot of a normal street, with people live dull, boring, everyday lives.
  2. Cut to close up of the main character, who is also living a boring, routine life. The expression on his face will show how bored the character is.
  3. Multiple scenes following the main character. all clips are boxed together with narrative of him talking to group of main cast, expressing dismay. the boxed in is supposed to represent his life being closed in.
  4. Cut to main character, with group, sat round the table. narrative is synced in to show the main character actually talking.
  5. Dialogue switches to planning the event. character slams down plans of the building etc, listing points etc.
  6. Joke will be in place here. Slow motion shots of running down either motorcycle or vehicle, emphasising the power of the machine. Narrative talks about a getaway vehicle.
  7. Shot cuts to L plate on the vehicle.
  8. Cuts to multiple sequences of action, in preparation of the event.
  9. After multiple action sequences, title of the film comes in, similar to a blast effect. Music and image fade out to black.
all of these decisions are set to change dependent of the length of the trailer, and whether or not the time length needs to increase or decrease.

Film Trailer: Planning

From my research, I have decided to create a film trailer in the genre of Action Comedy.
I have decided that the cast of the film will be mainly 4 main characters, with one being the most important of the 4.
The setting for the film will be set in a small town, with usual, everyday people living boring, everyday lives.
The 4 main characters decide to spice up their lives, by doing something outragious, E.G, Robbing the local bank.
The trailer will not feature the actual robbing the bank, rather showcase preparation for the event, as this will help when recording, and will not give too much away to the viewer, of whether they are successful or not.

Kick-Ass DVD cover

The colours used for the cover is that of the corperate image of the film, black and yellow contrast. these colours are similar of that of the comic and film Watchmen. As Kick ass is a spoof of a superhero film, it is known that it could use these colours to advertise the film as a superhero film.

Men In Black II DVD Cover & Movie poster

Here, black and white are the key contrast here, keeping in with the idea of Men In "Black", it was an obvious addition to make the colour black the main theme, and white is the main contrast of this. Silver and chrome are then used on weapons to compliment both the white and the black, as it can be considered the halve way point between the two, and helps to blend the two colours together. Using chrome and silver also makes the cover seem more futuristic, a key idea that needs to be portrayed as it is a key characteristics of the film. The cover utilises space, by creating a minimalistic design, creates the illusion of space, and therefore, the future.

The movie poster is similar to that of the DVD cover in terms of the major characters. The 2 main characters are shown exactly the same as they are on the DVD cover, however, additional characters where added onto the DVD cover to fill blank space. Here, white space is used effectively to show the emptiness of the characters, as their whole life is about the job. Alternatively, it could be considered that the DVD reused images from the movie posters, as the DVD was released a significant amount of time after the movie release, meaning that stock photographs had to be used.

Hot Fuzz DVD cover And Film poster

This DVD cover uses a very popular technique of having blue and orange colours contrasting each other. orange and blue are contrasting, yet are easy to blend together, making the whole cover looking as one rather than bits added on top of each other. The orange explosion in the background adds depth to the cover, making it seem to be happening, rather than having them just dropped into position. By adding the depth, it seems to give purpose. The characters shown More of the action side, rather than the comedy side of the film. Similar to that of the magazine covers, it could be presumed that it near impossible to portray comedy effectively, and it is far easier to portray action.

The film poster itself is similar to that of the DVD cover. For the film poster, the two main characters have been separated apart. This is mainly to fill up space that was not available for the DVD cover. It also allows space for the main title to be placed.

Kick-Ass EMPIRE Magazine cover

For this Magazine cover, the concept is very unique. The title of the magazine has been changed from the usual block red text to a blood splatter effect, linking in to the main character, who shows cuts and scars on his face, showing high action and giving the sense of danger. The main character is then situated in front of the text, giving the impression that the blood splatter text on the wall behind him belongs to someone else he is turning his back on. The wall also holds the names of  two other characters with superhero Comic style illustrations. These two characters could be the antagonist of the film, or characters that have betrayed the main character.
The cover illustrates more to the action side of this action comedy, rather than attempting to portray comedy. This technique seems to be common amongst action comedies. It could be said that it is almost impossible to portray comedy in a single image. although they do not attempt to show comedy fully, it is still present in the main character. the character is suited with a costume, however, the character physical attributes are stereotypical of that of the common super hero.
Lighting is used effectively to portray a darker side to the character, and a spotlight technique is used to represent the characteristics of a superhero being in the "spotlight"

Scott Pilgrim Empire magazine cover

Here, we see Scott Pilgrim, a character that has been mentioned during my Scott Pilgrim film trailer analysis. The magazine cover shows the character different to what is seen within the trailer. In the trailer, the character is shown to be an awkward, anxious teen. Here however, the character is portrayed to be a strong, Vengeful character.  These characteristics are shown within the trailer though, towards to lower end of the trailer time line. Knowing this, I can presume that the audience is more interested in seeing the powerful characteristics rather than the previous character. using the later developed character shows an overview of the film for advertisement, utilizing the main characters finest moments to create a greater appeal.
The background of the character is rather plain, using techniques similar to the trailer and within the film itself, such as motion lines at the side to focus the character, as well as using the films official font for the subheading.
EMPIRE Magazine usually uses the colour red for their heading, and the background  is usually plain white, however here, the corporate colours are reversed, with the colour white being used for the heading, and red being used in the background. This contrast in colours could reflect the film itself, suggesting that Empire believes that Scott Pilgrim is an alternative film, contrasting to the norm.

Trailer Ratings

A key feature that is present in all trailers is the original screen. Before the trailer, either a Green or Red screen is shown, dependent on the rating of the trailer. I will need to decided who the trailer is focused for, if the trailer is for an older, more mature audience, the red screen should be used, however, if the film is for under 18’s, a green version shall be used.

Beverly Hills Cop

Beverly hills cop trailer is different to that of previous trailer analysed, in that it is much older than other trailers that I have analysed, meaning that the techniques used during are a lot different to that of most recent trailers, for example, 1 track is played throughout the entirety of the trailer, and never cuts out, unlike that of trailers previous reviewed, where tracks would cut out to emphasise jokes. However no fading out of the track is present in the clip. This could be a sign of the change in humour since the 80’s, or could be an entirely different attempt of humour.
The clips in the trailer are seemingly that of a montage of best bits of the film, that are seemingly in continuity at the start, yet seem to lose continuity towards the end. This is a significant example of attempt to show a basic storyline, without given too much away.

Shaun of the dead

The initial sound that is heard from within the movie is of Simon Pegg yawning; however this sound resembles that of a groaning zombie. This immediately sets the genre of the film, however, the use of presenting him as a zombie, although he is not, foreshadows a zombie invasion. The sound track that follows it is a surreal uplifting sound track, that slowly goes lower pitched, until in fades out. Again, the sound track fades out when comedy is introduced, a common feature among action comedy films, and comedy films in general.
During the clip, it shows a Simon Pegg jumping over a fence, stating “haven’t you ever taken a shortcut?”. This links with the trailer for Hot Fuzz, in which the main characters are played by the same characters. In fact, both of these films are within a “trilogy” called blood and ice cream, in which there are 3 films by the same writer, starting the same actors, however, the films are not in sync, but have subtle references to the others.

Hot Fuzz

The initial shot we see is of Simon Pegg appearing in formal attire, followed by in his uniform. The freezing out to blue gradients gives the impression of other UK media, such as the Bill, well known for blue gradients in the intro. This impression of other media immediately relates the film to a specific genre. The music played other this scene is similar of that of mission impossible, with limited rhythm and just pure beats.

The music cuts out when humour occurs, a possible common feature among action comedy films. When Simon Pegg appears in a quiet county, a light-hearted song is used, to provide the irony of the situation. The camera continually changes scene by a wipe, or by motion overlapping the first clip. Black is effectively used to be faded out into the create suspense.

When action occurs, the song then returns back to a track similar to the opening, however, rhythm appears to be introduced to introduce comedy during the action. The action that is shown appears to be surreal, so comedy is combined with =the action. For example, gun fights within Summerfield. The action again seems to be combined with a 80s rock song, with screams being more present that actual singing

Dukes Of Hazzard

http://www.imdb.com/video/screenplay/vi2364604697/

The trailer immediately features a countdown along side a voice over, explaining the countdown is relevant to “the movie event of the summer.” The use of voice-over accompanying the countdown emphasises the significance of the film. The colour scheme used for the countdown is identical of the colour scheme for the “general Lee”, the icon of the Dukes of Hazzard Television series. Once the countdown ends, the screen cuts to the general lee, flying is slow motion, with the iconic “YEEEEE-HAAAAA” playing above it. These features where very common within the Television series, and therefore make it a symbol of the already cult following. Followers of the TV series will instantly recognise the film.

Rock music is played above action such as the car chase. Meanwhile, the camera fades in and out of black, to show the car chase out of continuity, and portray the action from different angles. Likewise with other previously analysed film trailer, the music cuts out when comedy occurs, to emphasise the comedy rather than any action that is occurring. Once the music begins again, it plays the iconic dukes of hazard theme tune. The trailer appears to be divided into two sections, halve of the trailer is focused on comedy, and seemingly the other halve is focused on the action of the film. This portrays the film to be both action and comedy.

Red - Film trailer analysis

The trailer shows Bruce Willis immediately from the get go. The use of the famous actor Bruce Willis, well known for films such as Die Hard, automatically portrays the film to a specific target market that has a cult following of Bruce Willis. The generic film Bruce Willis stars in is mainly action films, however, the opening scene of the film is Bruce Willis seemingly injured, but situated within a seemingly contrasting scenario of with an older women, within a seemingly older house. The music that accompanies this scene appears to be rather classical, which accompanies the appearance of a retired nature of the older generation.

When the action first appears, the music stops playing from classical, and pauses for a while before switching to the next scene. This supposedly creates awkwardness between the characters, which then generates comedy, which portrays the other genre of the film. The second track that is played has seemingly the same rhythm and beat of typical action film tune, for example, mission impossible; however, the tune also has a classical aspect to it, which then shows an older action genre, which is the specific genre of the film. The last track is a rock song, specifically Aerosmith. The rock song then portrays pure action of the film. The soundtracks used show a progression of the characters within the film, from retired, to semi retired, and then fully working characters.

Throughout the trailer, text is used to show the situation of the film without actually saying it. This technique of stating what is happening rather than just suggesting it makes the film appear to a simpler movie that isn’t too complicated, which is the basic needs for a comedy film. Comedy is seemingly showed by the situation rather than the jokes that are said.

Scott Pilgrim Vs The World analysis

http://www.hulu.com/watch/157509/movie-trailers-scott-pilgrim-vs-the-world---trailer-3

The initial shot that is seen is of a Ginger haired drummer. This immediately sets a tone for unconventionality throughout the trailer. A feature that is used consistently throughout the trailer is a drop of backing sound, to leave only the films conversation to be playing. The drop of music is used to create comical effect, focusing the audience on the joke rather than the music.

There are many Intertextual links within the clip, which also gives a representative of its genre. There are many links to comics books, for example, splitting the screen into two is representatives to comic books scenes. Another representative is of portraying sounds effects in textual form. As well as comic books, there are references to video games, with little flashing sprite animations often being on show.
